On Letting the Weeds Grow in South Texas

by Rachel

I have been letting weeds grow. One reason is because they are flowering right now and I like that. Another reason is because I feel remorse about cutting them down.

Maybe it was because we watched the Secret of Nymh so many times at school.

I just imagine the interconnected living things with their little communities down below the canopy of green, and I imagine that this interconnectedness depends on the native plant species that have lived here always.

I have hardly appreciated Texas things in all my life, but now I am making an effort to see beauty in what I once thought was boring, inconsequential and drab. All the thorny things.

So I am letting the weeds grow.

Of course THIS is a beautiful barrel cactus that I found on our property and moved to its new location in my front yard. Hamatocactus setispinus.
